A new report claims that Apple is working on a new 9.7in iPad that will be lighter than the third-generation tablet and have an improved display.

CNET reports that the updated iPad would “address issues with the first-generation product,” including the weight of the device, which increased from the iPad 2’s weight, and improving the LED backlight apparatus.

DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim said: “We are seeing [Apple] work with panel makers to come out with a display that a thinner overall [product] with longer battery life. Of course, the supply chain is dynamic, but we’re seeing some early indications that this may be happening.”

According to a research note from DisplaySearch, “Apple is working with the LCD supply chain to refresh the display, including revising the LED backlight design for cost reduction, refining the thermal solution, reducing the weight by replacing some components, and fine tuning the panel transmittance for lower power consumption.”

DisplaySearch suggests that Apple could produce about 7 million of the updated iPads in October.

This is not the first we’ve heard about a minor 10in iPad update. In May, we reported that Apple could be planning to launch three new iOS devices this year: the iPhone 5, iPad mini and a new 10in iPad. It was claimed that Apple supplier Pegatron had already received orders for the 10in iPad update.

The updated 10in iPad could be accompanied by an iPad mini, which is expected to launch at an event in October.

Apple is holding a special event next week, where the company is believed to be launching the new iPhone 5.

The iPad2 is so perfect (size, weight, screen) that upgrading to the "new" iPad or a 3 etc would be pointless without some HUGE redesign.
