Apple has shown off a new iPad mini with a Retina display and improved specifications this week. If you're planning on buying yourself the new iPad mini, which is still often being referred to as iPad mini 2, then you'll probably want to protect it by getting yourself a case. Here, we bring you the best new iPad mini cases that'll cover the second-generation iPad mini.
It's worth noting that the iPad mini 2 is actually 0.3mm thicker than its predecessor, so some precision cases designed for the iPad mini may not fit properly. For more information, check out our iPad mini 2 hands-on review
First up is Apple's own iPad mini case offering. Apple sells two different ways to protect the iPad mini and iPad mini 2: the Smart Cover and the Smart Case.
Apple's £35 Smart Cover is made with Polyurethane, and comes in a similar brightly coloured range as the iPhone 5c's case. There's black, pink, yellow, blue, green or red.
The Smart Cover doubles as a keyboard stand or FaceTime stand, and will automatically wake up your iPad when you open it and send it to sleep as you shut it. The Smart Cover connects to your iPad mini using a magnetic hinge.
Of course, the Smart Cover only protects the front of the iPad. If you want all-round protection, the Apple Smart Case might be more ideal. It's quite a bit more pricey, at £55, but it's made with leather and offers the front protection and stand functionality as the Smart Cover but with the added back and side protection.
There are six colours available: brown, beige, black, yellow, blue and red.
Available to pre-order now, the Joules iPad mini Anchor Print case protects the front and back of your iPad mini, and doubles as a stand, too. There are cut-outs for all of the ports and buttons, so you won't need to remove it. The magnetic fastening adds extra protection, too.
British Heritage brand Barbour has teamed up with Proporta to create this iPad mini 2 case that uses the same fabrics and materials as Barbour jackets, complete with the tartan interior.
It can be used as a stand, and leaves cut-outs for all ports, buttons and functions.
Griffin's IntelliCase covers both the back and front of the iPad mini, and its Smart Cover-like functionality enables users to position the iPad in two angles, and sleep and wake the iPad using the built-in magnets. The IntelliCase is available in Black, Red, or ZigZig designs.
The Griffin Folio is designed to make your iPad mini look like a notebook, enabling quick access to the tablet while offering all round protection from bumps and scratches. The Folio can also be used as a stand, holding your iPad in a landscape positions ideal FaceTime, reading or typing. There's a huge variety of different styles, with 14 designs available to buy.
Available in three designs, Be.ez's LA robe for iPad mini is a lightweight sleeve made with polyutherane and a sturdy zip, designed to offer maximum protection.
The popular Defender case from Otterbox is now available for the iPad mini 2 in three colour options. It has an impact-resistant shell and a stand for typing or viewing.
This practical case is made with non-slip material to offer a stand with two angles and protective corners to hold the iPad mini in place. (Note: We're awaiting confirmation about iPad mini 2 compatibility)
Fashioned from stylish red imitation leather, the Libris covers the iPad mini's display with a front flap that can be held in place with an elastic band. Within the flap are two pull-out leather stands (again attached with elastic) that prop your iPad mini in either vertical or horizontal orientation. It's a neat look, if somewhat schoolbooskis. The Libris adds a fair amount of bulk, but it's reasonably prices, offers decent protection and is smart and stylish to boot.
