Apple has just announced an iPad 4 with Retina display model with 128GB storage.
The larger sized iPad follows rumours that Apple was getting ready to introduce a new model. The new iPad 4 128GB is now the iOS device with the largest amount of storage. Previous iPad models have only offered up to 64GB storage.
The iPad 4 with 128GB storage be available from 5 February 2013 and will cost £639 for the iPad 4 128GB WiFi model, or £739 for the iPad 4 128GB WiFi with Cellular model.
The news follows the rumour of a larger iPad due to its reference in iOS 6.1. On Monday 28 Jan we reported that iOS 6.1 contained a reference to a 128GB iOS device. Customers have been asking for larger sized iPad, and iPhone, models for some time.
The iPad 4 128GB is not expected to differ in size, or function, in any way other than in a larger sized 128GB internal Flash card. By offering 128GB the iPad is now on par with many laptops in terms of storage space, although the device still functions differently. However, it is clear that this is another step towards making the iPad more of a permanent laptop replacement.
There is no news of a 128GB iPhone, but with the iPad now offering 128GB of storage it is clear that the iPhone, and iPod touch, will follow next. When the iPhone was first introduced in 2007 it offered just 8GB of storage, much less than the 120GB that the iPod offered at the time. The introuciton of Flash storage was controversial, but over time it has started to offer just as much space, with much better performance.
An Apple press statement says: "With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”
