Apple has released the first beta of iOS 6.1.1 to developers, following the public release of iOS 6.1 last week.
The iOS 6.1.1 beta 1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch became available for registered developers to download from Apple's development centre on Wednesday, and includes major enhancements to Maps for Japan.
Apple describes that the beta brings the following changes to Maps for Japan:
- Improved pronunciation of roads during turn-by-turn navigation
- Optimised directions to more strongly prefer highways over narrower roads
- Now indicates upcoming toll roads during turn-by-turn
- Added labels for junctions, interchanges, on-ramps, off-ramps and intersections
- Added indicators for transit station buildings, subway lines, and traffic lights
- Updated freeway colour to green
- Updated icons for some location categories including fire stations, hospitals, and post offices
- Added 3D buildings including Tokyo Station, Japan Imperial Palace, and Tokyo Tower.
The new beta also indicates that Apple is no longer including timers for its betas, as the iOS 6.1.1 beta 1 has no expiry date, reports 9To5Mac.
This week, the Evasi0n jailbreak for iOS 6.x devices was released, and it is not yet know whether the iOS 6.1.1 beta 1 patches any of the bugs exploited by the jailbreak.

I still struggle to believe how far off the ball Apple were with Maps. If you live in London or New York you're set..it's truly lovely! However, if you live pretty much anywhere else you are almost guaranteed to run into problems...and in many cases you could end up anywhere. Lets face it, they didn't even get it right in the city they are based in! I'm embarrassed for them really.
I can't think of any way they could have missed how it performed - or didn't perform - before it was released?
