Wed, 11 May 2011 NAVV UK & Ireland for iOS review
Low-priced sat nav app takes on the big boys, but quirks mean it can’t compete
- Manufacturer: NavvGPS
- Pros: Excellent value; good range of features including Points of Interest and alternative routes; turn-by-turn instructions and voice commands
- Cons: Not as fully featured as pricier rivals; poor-quality voice prompts; user interface quirks and annoyances; not quite ready for prime time
- Price: £6.99
- Star rating:
Ever since Apple put a GPS receiver inside the iPhone 3GS, it’s been possible to throw away your old TomTom and plump for a phone-based sat nav instead. The problem is, most of the available apps have been pricey – TomTom’s £49.99 UK & Ireland app included.
Rolling this way though is NAVV UK & Ireland, a low-cost alternative that’s previously been available on the app store as NDrive. For £6.99 you get comprehensive UK and Ireland maps, provided by teleAtlas, along with essentials like turn-by-turn directions, voice prompts and more.
Using NAVV UK & Ireland is fairly straightforward, with big on-screen buttons for the main features, which include full UK postcode search. You can also save your more frequent destinations as favourites.

Road to nowhere? NAVV UK & Ireland is good value for money. But TomTom’s superior UK and Ireland app costs less than a full tank of fuel
However, the app doesn’t feel as polished or full-featured as pricier rivals and there are some frustrating UI quirks: it can take ages to figure out how to do the simplest things sometimes – setting a destination as ‘work’ for example – with little on-screen assistance to help you along the way.
