- Star rating:
Denon has been upgrading a number of AV components, including the Ceol and RCD-N7, to AirPlay compatibility via a free scheme throughout 2011. By the time you read this, AirPlay will be available out of the box on many Denon components.
That’s a good addition to an already feature-packed system, which includes the ability to play a range of audio formats from CD and USB devices and listen to FM/AM and internet radio.
The white Ceol and the newly released Ceol Noir (in black, obviously) certainly look the part; reassuringly heavy and seemingly built to last, the system oozes quality. Round the back are plenty of sockets and outputs, including stereo speaker outputs, subwoofer out, Digital optical audio, FM/AM antenna sockets and ethernet socket. The Ceol comes with a long, large remote control, which, while fully featured, takes some time to master.
Sound, as you might expect at this price, is excellent, the Ceol promising and delivering rich and detailed playback from CD, iTunes and iOS devices. Denon uses a ‘simple and straight’ circuit design to help achieve this, which the company insists helps to optimise performance in sound quality. Our review model came with a matching pair of Denon SC-N7 compact bookshelf speakers.
