A simple and portable way of adding a keyboard to your iPad

This Bluetooth keypad from iGo labours under a misnomer - although it is marketed as an iPad accessory, it pairs with any Bluetooth device.

A slim sheet of rubber-coated plastic, the iGo weighs just 238g and measures 233 x 142 x 8mm. It’s neither flexible nor small enough to slip into a pocket, but has the same footprint as a 7in tablet PC, so adds little to the average professional iPad-user’s travelling kit.

Pairing the iGo keyboard with your smartphone or tablet is as simple as hooking up any Bluetooth device. Scan for it and lock on. Our iPad required that we type in a passcode, which was reassuring and not taxing.

In use the iGo is a little gem. It won’t replace a full-sized keyboard, but with distinct rubber-coated keys that offer pleasant feedback, typing on the iGo is akin to using a netbook, and union with our tablet, makes for a better remote setup than a netbook.

The iGo keyboard will appeal to touch-typists

Our typing expert said this keyboard is easier to use than many Bluetooth peripherals, and with the exception of the odd case of lag (and annoying placement of the Shift key), we’d agree. Function keys are included, and the layout is a hybrid of Apple OS X and Windows.

The iGo feels robust, the rubber coating prevents scratches, and it’s not so rigid as to run the risk of snapping. We carried it around in our bag for several days with no discernible damage. It recharges via a mini USB cable (supplied), and we used it for more three hours without needing to recharge.
