Wed, 08 Feb 2012 Case Mate TANK review
One of the toughest iPhone cases we’ve seen
Looking for an iPhone case that will stand up to some serious punishment? Planning to take it into battle? Then give Case Mate’s Tank a try.
The Tank lives up to its name with a heavy-duty chassis that falls into line with US military standards, according to the maker. The hard, polycarbonate shell protects from impacts and drops. There’s also a neat corrugated screen protector that can be retracted to a slot in the back when you’re using the touchscreen, so you get full protection and usability.
There are flip-out rubber covers for the headphone and bottom dock, and openings for the cameras – you’re free to use the iPhone normally without removing the case. And despite its robustness, the overall package remains reasonably portable – it doesn’t add as much weight and bulk to the phone as some tough cases we’ve tried.
Looks-wise, the Tank is on the basic side, in plain block colours. Our review sample came in military green and civilian orange, but all-black, black/pink and white/pink versions are available.

Finally, a warning that the case is a bit fiddly to apply, which Case Mate appears to acknowledge with an assembly video on its website. There’s a separate piece to cover the home button – you pop this on to the phone, then have to slide the two pieces together.
