Has it really been 10 years since Grand Theft Auto Vice City was released? It doesn't feel as long, but Grand Theft Auto Vice City for iOS (iPad & iPhone universal app) makes it feel like it never went away.
For a while Grand Theft Auto Vice City was the best-selling videogame of all time (until the third game, San Andreas) blew it out of the water. So the game probably won't need much introduction. You romp around a city (Vice City, a re-creation based upon Miami) as up-and-coming gangster Tommy Vercetti in the heat of the mid 1980s.
The open world contains beaches, ghettos, glitzy mansions - a whole world for you to play in. You get to run around, run amok, cause havok (the usual). Typically gaming activities include stealing cars, running people over, collecting guns, shooting rival gangs, shooting innocent pedestrians, and completing mission based objectives.
What set Grand Theft Auto Vice City apart was the apparant freedom to be found in a lovingly re-created world, brimming with humour. Dark humour, certainly, but funny nontheless.
The iOS version is both iPad and iPhone, and has updated graphics for the Retina display iPad and iPhone.
It also sports customisable controls, but they are on-screen controls. As with many games that started life on a console, and then worked to the touch-screen the controls are unlikely to be as accurate as a gamepad.
The game is famed for its music collection, a wide range of 1980's hits. All accompanied by comedic radio interludes. A nice touch is that you can create your own music PlayList called "VICECITY" and it that music will also play in the game (you get a new radio station called Tape Deck).
