Wed, 24 Mar 2010 Connect 4 for iPhone review
The classic game comes to the iPhone with bells on
- Manufacturer: EA Mobile
- Pros: Great 3D graphics; local multiplayer
- Cons: No online multiplayer option
- Price: £1.79
- Star rating:
Connect 4, the classic vertical board game has proven to be exceptionally popular over the years. Now, for £1.79, the game can be carried in your pocket.
The iPhone version has slick 3D graphics, local multiplayer, and some fun new game types. The only thing missing is the satisfying plink of the chips falling into place. The classic game pits two opponents against each other in an attempt to line up chips in rows of four – diagonally, vertically or horizontally.
Three new modes of play add a bit of variety. Max Score lets you play multiple matches within a set time. Pop Out adds a bit more strategy to the game by allowing a player to remove chips from the bottom row. Power Chip is similar to Max Score, but it includes four Power Chips with special attributes, changing the strategy of the game entirely. There’s also a Challenge Mode, which takes elements of all the game types and creates interesting scenarios you have to complete.
Connect 4 can be played locally side by side, so players can pass the iPhone between turns, or face to face, flipping the board between turns. Alternatively, Connect 4 can be played over WiFi or Bluetooth, though no online multiplayer capability is supported.
