Apple today confirmed that it has become the leading music retailer in the US for the first two months of 2008

Apple today confirmed its status as number one US music retailer.

NPD MusicWatch figures emerged this week, valuable market data which showed Apple to be the leading US music retailer - significantly beyond US high street giant, Wal-Mart.

It was revealed that Apple took 19 per cent of January's US music retail sales. That compares to Wal-Mart's 15 per cent, BestBuy's 13 per cent and Amazon's 9 per cent of retail sales.

The figures caused some confusion in the Mac media, with commentators pointing out that Apple had itself made claim to be number two retailer at a data subsequent to the period covered by the latest to emerge NPD report.

The facts, according to an Apple statement released tonight, are that the latest news emerges subsequent to those figures on which that previous claim was based. The latest figures confirm the company's top position in music retail in the world's largest music market.

"We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes. "We are thrilled, and would like to thank all of our customers for helping us reach this incredible milestone."

The iTunes Store became the largest music retailer in the US based on the amount of music sold during January and February 2008, Apple explained.
