O2 charges £3-£6 per MB of data downloaded when abroad

iPhone users in the UK are being warned to use the Data Roaming Off switch on their device when traveling abroad - or risk insanely great big bills.

The Times takes a look at just how much O2 will charge iPhone users for data (3G) bandwidth when traveling outside the UK. Users should be aware that O2's unlimited data and WiFi allowances only apply in the UK.

It claims the carrier charges almost £3 per megabyte when downloading data within the EU, or £6 per megabyte outside of Europe - meaning an email with a 1.5MB attachment will cost up to £9 to download, even if it's just spam.

O2's not the most expensive carrier: Data downloaded outside the UK costs up to £8/MB with Orange’s Dolphin 40 plan, while T-Mobile charges £7.50 per MB.

O2 does offer 10MB and 50MB data packages as Data Roaming bolt-ons to existing contracts at a cost of £20 or £50 per month inclusive.
