MTV Networks is expected to announce a joint online music venture with RealNetworks, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The partnership between the two firms is likely to see the termination of MTV's high-visibility service, MTV Urge, announced last year as a likely competitor to iTunes.

The termination of that service in favour of a new offering in partnership with RealNetworks shows limited success for Urge. The partnership is once again being announced as an attempt to create competition for iTunes.

The partners are reported to be working with Verizon Communications and Vodafone to offer a mobile version of the service.
