Sky Mobile TV has launched on the iPhone and iPod touch, offering a range of channels primarily aimed at sports fans.

Sky will offer at launch all Sky Sports channels, Sky Sports News, Sky News, ESPN and At The Races although these will only be available via a Wi-fi connection.

The broadcaster is unable to offer 3G coverage at the moment and for those who like to roam with iPhone in hand, some live events won't be available outside the UK due to rights restrictions.

Sky and ESPN also don't have the rights to broadcast WWE wrestling, HBO Boxing, MLB baseball, Serie A football and NCAA college basketball via mobile networks.

The application allows users to browse the Sky Mobile TV electronic programme guide (EPG) and see listings over the next 24 hours. To view live TV, customers will need to subscribe to the Sky Mobile TV service for £6 a month and register for a Sky customer ID (Sky iD).

"Sky Mobile TV offers more choice, control and flexibility for customers ensuring they can access the content they want, at a time that’s convenient to them, on the screen of their choosing," said David Gibbs, General Manager for Mobile at Sky.

Available from the Apple iTunes App Store, Sky Mobile TV is free but requires a subscription and the iPhone 3.0 Software Update or later.

More information can be found at skyid.sky.com/signin/mobiletv.

As part of the launch of the service mobile network operator O2 is giving its iPhone customer base three months' free subscription to Sky Mobile TV. According to O2 potential customers need to Text SKY to 2020 for a promotional code. You'll need to enter the code in the promotional code box as part of the subscription process. The offer is limited to 150,000 customers or until 2nd February 2010, whichever comes first.

Sky already offers a range of iPhone applications including Sky+ Remote Record, Sky News, Sky Sports Cricket Score Centre and Sky Sports Football Score Centre. The company claims 2 million downloads so far.

Note - No "WWE wrestling, HBO Boxing, MLB baseball, Serie A football and NCAA college basketball" That's a lot of missing coverage.

You can't use this app with Maestro card for payment.

Will this work with the component cable to my TV?

Works a treat! Lovely viewing on my iPod. I only ever wanted Sky sports, but didn't want to pay an outrageous amount of money for all the other SKY products. Iestyn - it didn't work with the cable on the TV. Only drawback in my opinion (so far anyway).

I've got a maestro card and it won't qaccept it. I really am angry about this. I don't understand why it can't just be linked to my monthly direct debit payments to sky tv.
