Apple released a software update for both generations of the iPhone and iPod touch on Thursday night. The update, version 2.2, features major additions to the Maps application, adds the ability to download podcasts directly from the device, and adds several more features while also offering bug fixes.

The version 2.2 update is approximately 250 MB in size and is available via iTunes by connecting an iPhone or iPod touch and clicking the Check for Updates button.

According to the Apple release notes and our own observations, the update contains the following changes:

Street view in Google Maps

The Maps application has received a major upgrade, including support for Google Street View, Google’s service that allows you to see actual panoramic photographs taken on the ground in various locations and attached to map data.

When you find an object in Maps, if Street View is available there’s an orange icon. Tap it, and you fly in to the location, with a quick zoom to the map, transition into Street View, and 90-degree rotation, Street View only works in landscape orientation.

Once in Street View, you can slide your finger to rotate the panorama. A corresponding circle in the bottom-right corner shows you where you are on the map and what direction you’re looking.

You can also tap on arrows to move around on the street. There’s even a Report button to “report inappropriate content,” someone naked in a window, maybe to Google.

Maps also gains two variations on Google Maps that have been available on Google’s web-based map site for some time: public-transit directions (available in limited urban areas), and walking directions. At the top of the map view when you’re in Directions mode you’ll find three buttons: driving directions, transit directions, and walking directions.

Tapping any of them will re-draw the directions to fit the requested form of locomotion.

Other enhancements to maps include the appearance of addresses on dropped pins and the ability to share locations via email. At the bottom of the detail view for a location, there are now three buttons in a row: Add to Contacts, Share Location, and Add to Bookmarks. Tapping Share Location will create a new email with a Google Maps URL tied to the location in question.

O2 online store is currently down for maintenance but displaying the iPhone. Maybe they are just going to start selling PAYG and Business phones through the online store in line with the pay monthlies, but maybe these are the rumored price cuts now that the smart phone market is starting to flood.

Here's hopin they do! Its renewal time for my Vodafone contract but don't want to commit to find the iPhone drops in price days later.

No functionality updates then. Still not worth having.

I would love this phone but it lacks so much.

benfrain.com said on Fri, 21 Nov 2008

I love the iPhone but 2.2 and still no cut and paste or MMS is rather annoying.

Coops said on Fri, 21 Nov 2008

What about forwarding a text? Have they done that? I don't care too much about cut n paste or MMS (tho this is a bit annoying) but not forwarding a text is daft. If they can improve voice quality why not text forwarding... gah!

Coops said on Fri, 21 Nov 2008

OK so the major, headline update has no relevance to UK users as there is no streetview in the UK... at least according to the streetview site at Google. So that's half the update seemingly pointless. Essentially then it's a few quality tweaks missing some fundamental issues. More like 2.1.2 than 2.2

Steve Clifford said on Fri, 21 Nov 2008

You can live stream podcasts over your network (It worked great on 3G on the O2 Network) perfect on your out and about as you it would take a long time to download a podcast over 3G

Thanks!

Steve

@Coops. Well you can check out StreetView to wander round American cities that you'd never visit.... and perhaps write a letter to your MP because it's parliament and UK privacy laws that are stopping Google from Street Viewing the UK.

Personally I think this update is awesome. Downloading and live streaming of podcasts is great; street view looks amazing and *fingers crossed* it'll all be a bit more stable now.

Who cares about maps when the phone cant even forward a text message. The first ever mobile phone I owned nearly ten ago had that feature!

John said on Fri, 21 Nov 2008

@Danni. Just use email, I mean ... Christ move on. Who cares if it can't forward a text, how often do you do that anyway? It's got a ton of great stuff in there, why does everyone yap on about the tiny odd things it doesn't do like text forwarding and MMS.

I'm glad Apple doesn't listen to a word you all say. The phone would be s**t if they put every single lousy feature everybody cries over.

Coops said on Fri, 21 Nov 2008

@Slinky - I did just that and have to say I'm impressed by streetview, though still wonder how often I'd use it in the UK. I wasn't complaining about UK privacy laws - rather that the article focused on something that isn't really relevant for UK users and isn't surely as simple to implement as text forwarding.

@John - the point isn't that you can use email it's that there are these other people in the world called 'noniPhoneowners' who can't access email from their phone in the street. Plus when I get spam texts I need to forward to O2 to get them to block the number. I can't email the text.

I agree I like the podcast download (again not that I use it that much) but it isn't the sort of development that should merit a whole point upgrade IMO

I'm really surprised that the tab at the top of the new Podcasts view in itunes reads "Catagories".

iphone owner said on Fri, 21 Nov 2008

@John - "move on" is a cr@p reply I would expect from a 12 year old. Every phone I have ever owned has been able to forward text.

I have enough problems getting signal and with dropped calls, I would love to be able to email!!

Mark Hattersley said on Fri, 21 Nov 2008

@Darren. Thanks for that tip off. News story is up.

What happened to emotions?

Haku said on Fri, 21 Nov 2008

I just got a text forwarded to me:

"Copy and paste! Copy and paste!
Copy and paste! Copy and paste!
Copy and paste! Copy and paste!
Copy and paste! Copy and paste!
Copy and paste! Copy and paste!

This message was not sent on my iPhone, I'm in a rush!"

My iPhone now properly syncs with my Fiat Blue&Me phone systems so I am well happy!!!!

Original iPhone did then 3G and it would not work since 2.0 update

Am well happy!!!

Coops said on Sat, 22 Nov 2008

Just noticed another enhancement: email txt resizes automatically so you dont need to zoom to readwhen the text is tiny. Its quite cool.

Josh said on Sat, 22 Nov 2008

Would like to see copy and paste and voice dialing without having to open a app!

CharlieB said on Sat, 22 Nov 2008

Another style of functionality update. What a joke.

Paul Valente said on Sat, 22 Nov 2008

Good phone NOT great phone.
No forwarding of text is so old hat I cant believe apple have missed the boat on that one. I like millions of people get jokes from friends and we are unable to forward them on . WAKE UP appple and smell the coffee.

@John "Just use email, I mean ... Christ move on. Who cares if it can't forward a text, how often do you do that anyway? Why does everyone yap on about the tiny odd things it doesn't do like text forwarding and MMS?"

Many people need a cut and paste facility as well as the ability to forward messages and jokes. Imagine not being able to forward an email – you'd have to cut and paste in to a new email each time. Now imagine not being able to cut & paste.

Now everybody cut and paste that last line and forward it to John.
