We are never sure where these emails linked to blog posts start but thanks to Macworld reader Julia for highlighting this wonderful video currently doing the rounds.

Take four girls, one cool cover and a bunch of iPhone and iPod touch apps and you can clearly create something uniquely different.

Making use of Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth and DigiDrummer Lite, all available from the Apple iTunes App Store, all-girl London-based The Mentalists create a melodic stylish take on MGMT's 'Kids,' a song controversially adopted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy without the bands permission.

The Mentalists, Kim E Leon, M'Alice, Emma, and Linza are influenced by bands such as MGMT, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Flaming Lips, and The Beatles, and this cover clearly does the original justice.

Only time will tell if we are about to see a trend for iPhone and iPod touch based music rather than simply listening to music on the go. As trends go The Mentalists have set a high standard, and future live performances could prove spontaneous events, assuming you've remembered to bring your iPhone or iPod touch.

Wow! Finally, this may be a good reason to acquire an iphone, or uprade to a touch ipod.

There is plenty of crap on the AppStore and it really prevents finding the hidden gems out there. Here are my suggestions:
- PozBook, it's like Evernote but with GPS coordinates, an interactive map, and exchange capabilities - record audio, photo, text, weblinks.
- Shazam is a great audio app to discover new music on the radio. It's really magic.
- And I love Yelp and the likes to find a nice place to eat when you're out - I've discovered so many nice places.

Great just great, I really like the girls voices, it takes a lot of creativity to do this and they have.

That's not a "live" performance, they clearly filmed it a few times from different angles and then put the vocal track on. Evidence:
1. No microphones.
2. Over-the-shoulder shot with quick cuts to long range shots, and the long range shots not showing any cameras behind them.

that was awesome.

Does it justice? This sounds terrible. And they miss a ton of notes.

Yet another proof of concept musical novelty that does little or nothing to advance music, and may in fact be counterproductive to the art.

There are newer production tools that double as live performance enhancers, which do have merit, but the jury is still out on the iPhone. As Patrick correctly points out, this video is not even "live".

Seriously gals, get a Lemur and leave the gimmicks to amateurs.

Great! I admire the creativity. The video, music and singing were wonderful.
