The D92 is the cheapest of the printers in this group test, at just £39. In the case of some printers a low price doesn’t necessary mean low cost – since the price of ink may turn out to be quite pricey, but the Epson inks are good value on a price-per-page basis.
It’s not particularly pretty, having a rather squat appearance, and is finished in a matte black plastic. It feels rather flimsy, though it worked well enough.
The D92 has a Micro-piezo print head with variable sized droplet, and a minimum 4-picolitre drop size. Resolution is optimised at 5,760 x 1,440. It’s a four colour printer, with all four colours in their own individual tanks so that each ink can be replaced as and when you need it, which helps to make it reasonably economical to run. It uses Epson’s Durabrite Ultra inks, which Epson claims will last on the page for up to 100 years.
This Stylus model takes media up to A4 size, which feeds into a holder on the top of the printer. Print speed is said to be 13ppm colour, and 25ppm black. However, in our document test it took 1 minute 30 seconds to produce the first page, and roughly one minute 25 seconds for each page thereafter, using the normal document setting. When it came to producing a colour photo on the Best photo setting it took 13 minutes and 30 seconds, which is really too slow. It was better on the standard photo quality setting, taking four minutes and 35 seconds – and the quality wasn’t actually much different on this setting compared to the Best setting. Overall, the print quality from this printer was excellent. It produced a reasonably good colour gamut, and the colour output was almost spot on without the need for any tweaking.
It comes with Epson’s Creativity Suite software, which can be used for editing digital images. This includes a reasonably good file manager for filing and finding images. It can be used for printing CD labels, driving a scanner, sending faxes or attaching images to emails. It handled most file formats, and even opened and edited RAW camera files.
