- Star rating:
The main application has received several boosts. Better support for the AVCHD format lets you back up content direct from HD cameras to DVD or Blu-ray or as an AVCHD archive. As with version 9, there’s a plug-in with which to add Blu-ray support to the burning utility. There are also new menu templates included in this edition for both DVD and Blu-ray. However, the HD-DVD and DivX disc options have been removed from the Video tab. You can still burn these files to a DVD, but there’s no longer a dedicated support for conversion.
In a more inspired move, Toast can download Flash-based web video while you browse. Using the Media Browser window you drag selections into the content window to burn a DVD video as usual or convert them to formats for iTunes, iPod, iPhone and so on. Conversion is also in the air for streaming audio, which Toast can capture and split into discrete tracks. It tags the captured audio with title and artist information and sends the tracks directly to iTunes. Audiobook CD files can be amalgamated into one track, complete with chapters.
For analogue to digital music conversion, disc labelling and backup duties Toast 10 adds new slideshow app FotoMajico and a rather sophisticated photo enhancement tool in the shape of LightZone, though this is the Roxio Edition (RE) with some feature limitations. There’s also SoundSoap SE, an audio cleanup tool for music and video clips, and completing the new mix is SonicFire Pro, a tool that allows you to add soundtracks to videos and slideshows. A second disc ships with the Pro version, loaded with bonus tracks for this purpose.
