The name of the ESP Office 2170 makes it clear that this is very much designed as a workhorse office printer. It costs just £120, and is the only model in this group to provide a built-in fax machine along with its printing, scanning and copying features. It even includes an automatic document feeder so that you can leave it to copy or scan documents while you go off and do something else.

Kodak puts a lot of emphasis on its low running costs, and the Office 2170 certainly undercuts its rivals on that score by quite a margin. Using Kodak’s XL-size ink cartridges you’ll get printing costs of just 2p per page for black-and-white documents and a very competitive 3p per colour page.

Print quality is very good for text and graphics. However, as the Office 2170 prints with just the four basic CMYK colours we found that large photographs printed on plain paper were a bit darker and less vivid than we would have liked. The print quality did improve drastically when printing photos on more expensive glossy paper, allowing it to produce very respectable photo prints, but we’d still say that it’s more suited to general office work with photo printing as an added extra.

Print speeds are also relatively modest, coming in at around 4ppm for black and white and 1.5ppm for colour, and we were disappointed to see that it doesn’t support automatic double-sided printing. We also noticed that the Kodak Home Centre software provided for the Mac lacks a few features found in the Windows version of the software, such as the ability to grab still images from video clips. Those features are hardly essential, though, and Kodak picked up some brownie points for its Pic Flick app, which allows you to quickly print photos from your iPhone or iPad.
