The Peritab-301 is a worthy budget option for beginners in creating digital art
- Manufacturer: Perixx
- Pros: Good size; budget price; 1,024 levels pen pressure; decent build quality
- Cons: No-frills pen feels cheap; many of the Macro keys likely left unused; no bundled software
- Price: £44.90
- Star rating:
The budget Peritab-301 boasts a 30.5 x 25.6cm active area with room to create freely at a fraction of the cost of industry leader Wacom. Plain and unremarkable, the Peritab-301 won’t win any design awards, but does a decent job when photo editing, drawing and painting.
The 301 offers 1,024 levels of pen pressure, which makes working creatively a tactile experience. Though it took a little time to master the cheap-feeling pen and compensate for its shortcomings, it managed to produce good results.
The tablet sports a whopping 29 Macro programmable keys, which run around the active area. These are meant to help speed workflow but in reality are more of a distraction than useful addition. Build is surprisingly good given the price, though we suggest you find a safe place to store the flimsy pen, particularly the nib. One of the concerns of buying lesser-known brands is finding replacement pens, if one breaks or is lost.
