Australian users are switching to the Mac at a faster rate than anywhere else in the world, a report claims.

The Courier-Mail cites research figures from Gartner which show Mac sales grew 52 per cent in Australia in the second quarter - nearly six times the rate of the PC industry overall.

"This is even better than in the US, where Mac sales have been growing at about three times the industry average," the report explains.

Apple's share of the Australian computer market in the second quarter of 2008 was 5.3 per cent, according to Gartner, up from 3.8 per cent a year ago. Rival research firm IDC puts the present figure as high as 6.2 per cent, the report claims.

"If Mac sales continue to grow at this rate, the platform will have a double-figure market share within a few years. In the US this will happen even sooner, with the Mac's market share topping 8 per cent in the latest quarter," we are informed.

And who knows? Time for Microsoft to re-invent itself as Mac did with the OSX system or be forgotten about in the next decade!

I'm a 20 year WIndoze user who switched over after using an iPhone. Now I have both machines alongside each other and realize just how much better the Mac works. I spend zero downtime with the Mac, but am always having to do something to tweak the XP machine. I'll never buy another WIndows machine again in my life!

In a totally flat global market it is easy to make these announcements. I bet it does not take into consideration the thousands of corporate sales that Apple will never touch. Also people upgrade PC's with cpu's, video & sound cards instead of buying a new machine which is not so easy and a lot more expensive on Mac's.

I work part-time as a home and small office PC repairer. I rely for the majority of my earnings on fixing the results of virus and spyware attacks. Most of the rest is a mixture of Windows getting in a mess for no identifiable reason. (At least it's not usually cost effective to spend a customer's money on trying to unravel the myriad causes of this). I changed to a Mac as my main machine early last year and was pleased to find that everything I had read about how much better, easier and more enjoyable to use and infinitely more reliable Macs are was true. It is a shame that the discussions about Macs vs PCs are so often partisan with a football-supporters' level of argument employed. I found the facts speak for themselves and I won't be going back to a PC. It's just a pity that Macs are so much more expensive otherwise the trends seen in Australia, US etc would be far greater.
