Confirming all recent rumours, Apple has officially announced a music themed event to be held on Wednesday 9 September 2009.

The event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, California, starting at 10 am Pacific Time.

The event invitation comes with the words "It’s only rock and roll, but we like it," no doubt inspired by the lead single from The Rolling Stones 1974 album "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll."

September, is traditionally the month Apple introduces new iPods, in time for the all important holiday season. Over the weekend reports suggested supplies of iPods in stores being run down in preparation for new models being announced.

"The expectations are that Apple will add video camera functionality to the iPod touch, [still] camera functionality to the nano and refresh the iTunes software," Brian Marshall, an analyst at Broadpoint AmTech said.

"That's pretty much it, although we could potentially see a refresh on the desktop too, lower prices and faster processors," Marshall added, referring to Apple's iMac systems.

Along with new iPods, rumoured to come with cameras, the event could see the launch of iTunes 9 and finally a tie-up with The Beatles.

The date also sees The Beatles copious back catalogue remastered and rereleased along with the launch of 'The Beatles: Rock Band,' video game for Xbox, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. Steve Jobs, a major fan of The Beatles, has been trying for some time to get the fab four back catalogue on iTunes.

@SJ Have you tried using the Dock connector with its multiple adaptors recently?

Or you could just keep your current iPod y'know. Just a thought...

These annual non-events are getting a bit boring.

Perhaps it's just the iPod that isn't as interesting as it used to be.

Especially in the shadow of the iPhone. Will be interesting to see what they do though. And I'm keen to see iTunes 9 and the rumoured social networking features.

Also there's the rumour about the new format the encapsulates artwork and video for albums into a single file. It's designed for albums so they have more appeal on iTunes.

Oh and if they reveal an App Store for the Apple TV and a new controller. Now that would be interesting...

Problem with these events is that almost all the info is leaked in someway before leading to a deflated response afterwards. So ipod refresh, itunes update and Beatles on itunes using the new album format apple are going to launch. These enhanced media files will encourage more full albums to be purchased. Hoping for 64bit itunes with a redesigned UI (itunes X!).

Wot! You've not mentioned the iTablet...

Or is it one of those predictions the Mac Press would rather forget? I guess no mention of the tablet would make the whole event overhyped?

The iTablet hardly fits into the music theme midger or have we missed something.

Not a fan of the iPhone, the only people I know who have them get the monthly bills paid for them by bosses.

@Boony "Events are now boring, sooner the stopped doing then now. don;t expect anything from them now."

Should we kill ourselves as well? Get a grip, I look forward to Mac events as they are generally a show case for products everyone else will be emulating in the next 2 - 3 yrs.

Ignore the trolls, all Apple events are worth seeing, reading about, this one will be as well.

The lyrics also appear in Peter Gabriel's 1974 Genesis album: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

Maybe an iPod filled with the entire Rolling Stones catalogue? (It's only rock n roll but we like it.) Hmm?
