An original Apple-1 computer in full working condition has sold at auction for a record breaking £397,000 (€630,000) at auction.
The auction took place in Cologne last week, and the Apple 1 was expected to sell for between €120,000 and €200,000 (£96,800 and £161,500). The winning bid was placed by an anonymous internet bidder, massively exceeding the previous record for an Apple 1, which was $374,500 (£240,900) at a Sotheby's auction in New York earlier this year.
About 200 of the vintage computers were produced and sold in 1976 at a price of $666.66 (£426) and the lasted model to be sold is thought to be one of just 43 Apple-1 computers left in existence. Of those, only six are known to still work.
The Apple-1 consisted of a circuit board hand-built by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and was sold without a case, power supply, keyboard or monitor. Buyers had to provide those components.
The record-breaking Apple-1 sold at auction this month came with a period Apple-recommended monitor, keyboard and data cassette recorder.
