Fri, 05 Sep 2008 Apple licenses new chip tech for mobile devices?
Apple continues to weave together its future product development
A company linked with Apple has announced a major deal that could see new technologies implemented in future Apple products.
Imagination Technologies has announced the company has reached a new multi-year, multi-use license agreement which gives an "an international electronics systems company" access to Imagination’s wide range of current and future PowerVR graphics and video IP cores.

"As a result of this new agreement, it is expected that Imagination’s IP cores will feature in a number of new SoCs to be used in this company’s future products. Under the terms of the above licensing arrangement, Imagination will receive on-going licence fees as well as royalty revenues on SoCs incorporating Imagination’s IP," the company explains.
It has previously been thought that Apple licenses Imagination Technology's graphics cores - the company uses the fourth-generation PowerVR chipset in the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Based in the UK, Imagination creates and licenses market-leading embedded graphics, video and display accelerators, multi-threaded processors and multi-standard receiver technologies with a particular focus on mobile devices.
The new agreement may be an indication that Imagination may have followed ARM Holdings, another company that's believed to have granted Apple "a license to design system-on-chips with its processor core", EETimes reported.
The latter report hints Apple may be assembling the rights, licenses, skills, and (with the company's recent acquisition of P.A. Semi) the experience to develop proprietary solutions for its own future families of mobile products.
