The next generation of iPods could come equipped with cameras, as rumours re-emerge that Apple has placed an order for a massive number of camera modules similar to those found in the iPhone.

Back in May, Mac enthusiast site HardMac suggested the iPod touch would soon come with a built in camera. That story has now reappeared with the addition of a video camera following the release of the video equipped iPhone 3GS.

Alongside the iPod touch, the rumours suggest the iPod nano could also be gaining a camera.

The move could prove a popular one, following the success of low cost video devices such as the Flip Mino, Flip UltraHD and Flip Mino HD.

Web site TechCrunch claims to have proof of a far east Apple order following a MacRumors story allegedly showing a new iPod touch case with a cut out space for a camera phone.

"One of our sources in Asia say that Apple has placed an order for a massive number of camera modules of the type that they include in the iPhone. These are inexpensive cameras, in the $10 range. And the size of the order, our source says, means they can only be used for one thing - the iPod," suggests Michael Arrington at TechCrunch.

Meanwhile, TheAppleLounge highlights another possible 3rd generation iPod touch case design at DealExtreme.

The $1.71 'Protective Silicone Case for iPod Touch 3 (Blue)' appears to show a hole for a camera.

A DealExtreme Web site ad appears to shows an iPod Nano 5 case with another hole for a camera.
