Anti-virus and security service that covers Macs, PCs and Android
- Manufacturer: Symantec
- Pros: Protects a combination of five Macs, PCs and Android devices, includes 24-hour telephone hotline
- Cons: Anti-virus software still not essential for Macs
- Price: £99.99
- Star rating:
Most Mac users never bother with anti-virus or security software, but the recent stories about the Flashback Trojan will have worried many people and might make you think that it’s time to start taking extra precautions.
Norton already sells two software products for Macs – Norton AntiVirus (£39.99) and Norton Internet Security (£49.99). Those aren’t great value for money, though, as they only provide protection for a single Mac – whereas the PC versions of those products include licenses for three separate PCs. However, Norton’s latest release provides better value for people who own a combination of Macs, PCs – and even the dreaded Android.
Norton One is really a service rather than a single piece of software. Priced at £99.99 for a 12-month subscription, it allows you to protect up to five different devices, which can be any combination of Macs, PCs, and Android phones and tablets (iOS devices aren’t included, but Apple vets all software sold on the App Store to prevent viruses and other nasties getting onto your iPhone or iPad).
You can sign up for Norton One online, and then add your devices to your account by using the ‘dashboard’ page on the Norton web site to send an invitation email to each device. Once that’s done you can download the relevant anti-virus software onto each device – so a Mac will download the Mac version of Norton Internet Security, while PCs and Android devices will download their own versions of the software.

Hopefully that software will be able to handle most problems automatically, but if you need any extra help or advice then your Norton One account also includes access to a 24-hour telephone helpline with trained staff who can help you out. And, as one last little bonus, your account also includes 25GB of online storage that you can use to back-up important files.
