Apple has updated its Safari Web browser to version 3.2. Versions are available for download both for Mac OS X and Windows. Safari is free to download and use.

Separate downloads are available for users of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating systems.

Apple recommends the update for all Safari users. The 3.2 release improves protection from fraudulent phishing Web sites and offers better identification of online businesses. It also adds the latest security updates.

According to security information posted by Apple, many of the changes to Safari 3.2 are specific to the Windows version, which runs on Windows XP or Vista. But the Mac version gains some improvements too.

According to Apple, disabling autocomplete on a form field may not prevent data in the field from being stored; this update properly clears the form data.

Visiting a maliciously-crafted Web site that is designed to exploit a problem with Safari's handling of JavaScript array indices can lead to an unexpected termination or arbitrary code execution; this update also fixes that problem.

Lastly, WebKit's plug-in interface does not block plug-ins from launching local URLs; this update addresses that problem by restricting the types of URLs that can be launched through the plug-in interface.

Won't work with Pith Helmet. Drag Pith Helmet from /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plug Ins/ to Trash and then Reboot. Now Safari won't crash any more. Or, revert to earlier Safari using Time Machine.

Great download - now Safari randomly crashes when it feels like it, I've had about 4 crashes in the last hour, sometimes when the app is just sat there doing nothing. Do not have 'Pith Helmet' of whatever that is?!

Stop visiting dodgy sites then Neil. I've been running it for the last 8hours... not a single crash. Problem perhaps between keyboard and chair? Take a look... might be you.

I'll stick to a tried & trusted way: leaving all updates for a few weeks until I know for sure that there won't be any niggling issues. :)

Well I downloaded the new version last night and so far I've had no problems at all!

I downloaded 3.2 on my Mac and my wife's Acer. On the Mac, the anti-phishing feature works, for example the original PayPal site would show PayPal written in green text at the top right corner of Safari. On Windows though, this doesn't happen. It's the same with the Windows machines in my office running Safari 3.2. Is there something Apple isn't telling us?
