Duplicate files are one of modern computing’s most frustrating failures. Extra copies created by poorly configured photo programs, audio apps and auto-saving productivity tools fill your hard drive with stuff you’ll never need.

Tidy Up’s a tool you can use to reduce all that mess. It’s a highly configurable duplicate file finder with intelligent filtering features. Cleaning up copies begins with a search and Tidy up enables you to interrogate files using a wide range of single or combination parameters. From content type to time created, file size to tags. The tool searches through the types of file data readily accessible in Finder - but it also sifts through metadata in file types that support it.

This latter feature is especially handy when you’re trying to reduce clutter caused by duplicate media files. Tidy Up explicitly supports MP3 and AAC sound files and the EXIF data that is found in images. It also syncs up with iPhoto, Mail and iTunes. iTunes can find duplicates for you, but deleting them is a different matter. With Tidy Up you can easily select a list of duplicates to trash, move or back-up. There’s no need to worry about losing files either. Tidy Up has a built-in security feature that ensures at least one copy of your duplicate file remains behind.

These core features have been boosted in version 3 with a new, easier to use interface. You can choose to browse results as a list or in a handy grid. The most useful enhancements are“Smart Baskets” that are able to determine which files you need to remove.
