Cloudee is a backup service specifically for videos. It’s the creation of Boxee, a company that corrals TV shows and online video content into a single interface in a similar way to the Apple TV.
It provides access to your videos via ‘the cloud’, so you no longer need to fill up your iPhone with video taken on it. We’ve found it a useful way to claw back space on our MacBook Air too.
Unlimited storage and the ability to carefully control video sharing with friends and family are its distinguishing features.
You start by pointing your iPhone’s browser at cloudee.com or sending your phone a text link to download the app. Add +44 to a UK number to have Cloudee recognise it. Facebook login credentials are used throughout, but you can also email links to people or share your videos with your Twitter followers. For privately sharing with family and close friends, set your Facebook preferences accordingly.
The program doesn’t seem to recognise whether you’re using a supported browser, but the dedicated Cloudee Uploader software for Mac installs in seconds. There’s a per-video limit of 500MB. You can rename videos, then save them to an online album. Clips we shared on Facebook showed no thumbnail preview though.

The accompanying Cloudee iPhone app pulls up your video library. The video screen goes from mono to colour as the upload progresses. Cloudee is open-source and browser agnostic, so your videos should be viewable on any device. A suitcase feature for smartphones lets you download videos for viewing offline. Delete a clip once you’ve finished watching to free up the space again and the clip will be safely stored in your Cloudee account online.

If several friends have taken video of the same event, you can store and share it by uploading it to the same Cloudee folder. Facebook friends who use Cloudee automatically become Cloudee friends - but you can also share with friends you specifically invite to share your Cloudee space by email.
