Optimise and defragment your drives
- Manufacturer: ProSoft
- Pros: Defrag, optimise, test, verify, copy and clone tools make this a valuable bundle
- Cons: Nothing we can think of. Drive Genius really deserves its top rating
- Price: £61
- Star rating:

Drive Genius is the disk-maintenance kit that should have shipped with your Mac. Sounds dramatic? This program could save your system from a terminal crash, especially if you’re working with large media files, photographs, video or sound.
Drive Genius boots direct from CD, to ensure that no other applications are writing data to your drive. The interface is straightforward, with a three-panel screen that lets you choose which drive you want to work on, lists information about that drive, and allows you to pick an operation to perform.
The program’s up to just about any repair or drive maintenance task. You can verify, repair and rebuild the data on a dodgy disk and there are drive-cloning tools for backing up data from unstable systems. Drive Genius uses the SMART protocol to diagnose the physical state of your drive too – just in case your problems are hardware related.
