Remember the antenna issue that haunted the iPhone 4; reception problems whenever the device was held in a certain manner? Well, those who were plagued with such inconvenience are now to receive a $15 cheque, costing Apple an estimated $175 million.
With the cheque, customers will receive an explanatory letter, part of which, reads: “Enclosed is a cheque in the amount of $15.00 representing your settlement award in the Apple iPhone 4 Settlement Class Action Settlement. The amount of your settlement award has been calculated pursuant to the terms of the Settlement that was approved by the court.”
An Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Harrison, told The Loop that: “This Settlement relates to a small number of customers who indicated that they experienced antenna or reception issues with their iPhone 4 and didn’t want to take advantage of a free case from Apple while it was being offered in 2010.”
Antennagate marks one of Apple’s biggest blunders of 2010, if not, ever. It might not have boded so badly; Apple initially tried to downplay the issue, but it quickly escalated to lawsuits and angry customers, and Consumer Reports recommending not to buy the iPhone 4.
The problem seems to have been down to a glitchy proximity sensor - that’s the part whichenables or disables the display of the phone, in accordance to how close your face is to the screen.
As well as a heavy sum of money, Antennagate also cost Apple its head engineer. Senior vice president of engineering for the iPhone and iPod, Mark Papermaster, left the firm shortly after the affair.
The cheque will be sent to customers in the US only, and must be cashed by July 16, 2013, if not, the cheque will be void and Apple will not reissue another.
