Apple has begun shipping the fifth generation iPod touch to customers who pre-ordered the new device.

On Tuesday, customers began to report that they have received shipping confirmation emails from Apple, informing them that their pre-ordered iPod touch is on its way.

Delivery estimates suggest that the iPods will arrive on 15 October, according to GigaOm, but Apple's website still states "October" as the shipping date for the device.

Engadget Chinese's Richard Lai posted a photograph on Twitter of the new iPod touch in a Hong Kong Apple Store, suggesting that the device will begin appearing in all of Apple's retail stores this week.

We've not yet heard any word on the new iPod nano's shipping status, but we will continue to update this story as we hear more.

The shipping emails follow today's earlier release of the official fifth-generation iPod touch user guide from Apple.
