Apple design chief Sir Jonathan Ive has been named as one of the most influential people in the world in 2013's TIME 100.
This week, TIME published its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, revealing that Ive has been named in the Artists category this year. The Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence, director Steven Spielberg, writer George Saunders and more join Ive in the Artists category.
Popular musician and activist Bono wrote a short piece for TIME to accompany Ive's new accolade, describing the London-born designer as "classic Apple," which he says is "polished" and "honed to simplicity."
"What the competitors don't seem to understand is you cannot get people this smart to work this hard just for money," Bono continued. "Jony is Obi-Wan. His team are Jedi whose nobility depends on the pursuit of greatness over profit, believing the latter will always follow the former, stubbornly passing up near-term good opportunities to pursue great ones in the distance."
"Jony's values happen to add value – emotional and financial. It takes a unique alchemy of form and function for millions of people to feel so passionately about the robot in their pocket," Bono's piece concludes.
Sir Jony Ive is Apple's senior vice president of industrial design, and is the leading designer behind a raft of Apple products including the iMac, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, and iOS devices. He's been recognised with numerous design awards, including being named Designer of the Year by the Design Museum London in 2003 and being awarded the title Royal Designer for industry by the Royal Society of Arts.
In April 2012, Ive was crowned British Visionary Innovator in a competition run by the Intellectual Property Office, and wasIve was named the most powerful figure in British technology by Wired magazine the following month.
Earlier this year, Jony Ive was presented with a gold Blue Peter badge, which he said is "absolutely incredible."
Others named in the 2013 TIME 100 include Yahoo's Marissa Mayer, Kate Middleton, Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama.
