Apple's iTunes Store now has more than one billion podcast subscriptions, the company announced on Monday.

To celebrate the milestone, Apple has highlighted some of the most popular podcasts on the iTunes Store since Podcasts on iTunes launched in 2005.

According to Apple, there are 250,000 podcasts on the iTunes Store, spanning 100 different languages. Those podcasts amount to 8 million individual episodes to date.

"From comedy to hard news to sports to innovative content and so much more, podcasting has transformed the global media landscape," Apple says on its new podcast promotion.

Among the highlighted podcasts are The Bugle, Answer Me This! And The Ricky Gervais Podcast, as well as new and noteworthy podcasts like BBC Radio 4's Short Cuts and the National Theatre's The Shed.

Apple updated its iOS Podcasts app in March, bringing with it a redesigned interface that foretold the design of iOS 7, as well as new features like playlists, custom stations and enhanced iCloud support.
