Apple is the twelfth fastest-growing technology firm according to the prestigious annual CNN Money top 100 list.

Apple has slipped slightly (it took third place in last year's list), following the relatively recent emergence of cybercrime and defence-focused technology firms as growth stories in the US.

Describing Apple, CNN explains: "Why it's hot: Apple followed its blockbuster iPod line with the Intel-powered MacBook, whose Windows compatibility revived Apple's laptop sales. Next up: the iPhone."

In a strange twist of fate neither Google, Microsoft or Adobe made this year's list. A CNN editor explains: "Google is still too young for this list; to qualif you need to have been a public company for three years. The search giant will likely debut next year."

Microsoft doesn't have that excuse.
