Prominent audio book online retailer Audible has released an iPhone app.
The app provides instant access to audibooks that have been purchased through the Audible website. These can be streamed directly through the app, or downloaded and stored locally.
Audible is the company that provides audiobooks purchased through iTunes, but only books purchased from the Audible site appear in the Audible app.
The bespoke app enables Audible customers to wirelessly transfer books; or stream them remotely without having to go through iTunes.
It also offers a number of addition features, such as the ability to control audio playback using swipe gestures on the screen. Users can also set audio books playing for a set period before stopping (presumably for bedtime listening).
Like the iPod app, Audible offers different playback speeds. So listeners in a hurry can speed up the audio to up to three times the original playback speed.
The one thing you can't do is purchase audiobooks from within the app. For this you still need to visit the Audible website.
Audible is available now for free from the app store. Click here for Audible app on the iTunes Store.
