BBC director general Mark Thompson has told attendees of the FT's Digital Media & Broadcasting Conference that the BBC's iPlayer video streaming service will be available worldwide in 2011, with a subscription fee of less than US$10 ((£6.13))per month.

The Guardian reports Thompson saying that the broadcaster's iPad application will definitely launch this year with a cost of "a small number of dollars per month, definitely less than 10."

International subscribers to the BBC iPlayer application on the iPad will also be able to access an archive of BBC content, and video from other British broadcasters like ITV and Five. The announcement comes almost simultaneously with the launch of the iPad 2 by Apple at an event in San Francisco.
