Apple may have introduced a new 'in-cell' display with its iPhone 5 as recently as September, but new reports suggests that problems with the technology have led Apple to consider using a new 'touch-on' display in the next generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5S or iPhone 6.

According to China Times (Google Translation), Apple is working with LCD maker Chimei Innolux in Taiwan on the panels for its next generation devices. The report claims that "interference problems" with the iPhone 5's touchscreen, which include sensitivity issues such as the touch-based 'glitch' spotted in the device in November, mean Apple is planning to switch to a different technology for the next iPhone's display.

The new touch-on display technology allegedly being considered by Apple is said to be thin and tough. Industry rumours suggest that touch-on displays have already been sent to Apple's Cupertino campus for testing.

The iPhone 5's in-cell touch panel helped Apple make the device thinner than its predecessor, because it integrates the touch sensors and the display pixels into one component. But in combining the two, interference appears to have increased, resulting in the scrolling glitch as mentioned above.

China Times also highlights the manufacturing issues Apple faced when it launched the iPhone 5 in September. Reports claimed that suppliers struggled to make the iPhone 5's display fast enough to meet demand, because of the more difficult process needed to produce the in-cell screens.
