UK Radioplayer, an online catch-up service for radio that will allow web users to access previously broadcast content from around 200 BBC and commercial stations will launch on March 31.
According to The Telegraph, Matt Deegan of radio consultancy Folder Media, let slip about the launch date on Twitter. "Very excited about UK Radio Player launching on the 31st March. We're very pleased with our stations' implementation," he tweeted.
The service, which has been dubbed "the iPlayer for radio" marks the first time content from BBC radio stations has been combined with programmes from commercial stations including Classic FM and made available through one platform. It will offer content from around 200 Ofcom-regulated stations and will also offer a search feature so users can find stations by music, location and format and the ability to add favourite songs to a 'playlist'.
UK Radioplayer has taken two years to create. An alpha version of the service was first unveiled at last year's Radio Festival, which took place in Manchester in October.
It is also expected that the service will be available through YouView, the BBC backed online TV catch-up service that will use internet-connected set-top boxes, which is thought to be launching next year, as well as being integrated into Facebook and other social networking sites.
