South Kent College in Dover plans to give 250 students free iPod nanos to help them learn.

The college has spent £25,000 on the devices, which it expects students will use to keep up with lecture podcasts.

Assistant principal Josh Coleman is attempting to explore new ways of learning, despite local protestors calling the scheme "wasteful".

Initial topics made available as podcasts at the college will include IT, motor vehicle engineering and childcare.

In the US iPods have become integral to the courses of many schools and colleges that have begun employing them.
