An online petition is calling for Apple to “set the ethical example” and eliminate DRM from iTunes.

The petition, launched by DefectiveByDesign, part of the Free Software Foundation, suggests that as the largest purveyor of DRM music, Apple should take responsibility for the situation.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs made his thoughts about DRM clear in an open letter published on Apple’s website in February. He said that the company would happily remove DRM from tracks sold in the iTunes Store if the record labels would let it.

DefectiveByDesign’s response to Jobs’ letter is to suggest that Apple should remove FairPlay from iTunes songs by independent artists and remove DRM from Disney films. (Jobs has been a major shareholder, and on the board at Disney, since that company bought Pixar.)

The petition received 1,000 signitures in the first five hours.
