The next iPad mini may be delayed until next year due to issues, according to reports. See also: iPad mini 2 review of reviews - what do the experts say about the iPad mini with Retina Display?

The reason for the delay is Apple's decision to include a Retina display. An Economic Daily News report (translation from Chinese) suggests that there are capacity problems with the Retina display panel production.

The iPad mini's Retina display would offer the same amount of pixels as the bigger model, according to Apple Insider's report. That suggests that Apple needs to pack in 3.1 million pixels into the smaller screen.

Previously reports had claimed that the new iPad Mini with Retina display will have a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536, which is the same as the Retina screen on the iPhone 5 (also 3.1 million pixels).

The new version of the full-sized iPad will still launch in September, according to the rumour mill.

In June, it was reported that Apple could push production of its iPad mini 2 to November. It's expected that Apple will want to get the new iPad mini on the shelves before the Christmas shopping period, in order to maximise sales of the new tablet. The China Daily report suggests that the new date will fit with the Lunar New Year.

Reports earlier this year had claimed that the new iPad mini will feature a new Retina display, but would still use the same processor chip as the current model. Other reports claimed the second-generation iPad mini would feature the A6X processor that Apple created for the iPad 4.

A report in February suggested that introducing a Retina display to the iPad mini could add 30 per cent to the overall cost of the tablet's components, potentially increasing the price for consumers.

The new iPad mini is said to be slightly thicker at 7.5mm (rather than 7.2mm) due to the fact that it will need a larger battery to power the new 2,048 by 1,536 pixel display.
