Plants vs. Zombies, the popular iPhone and iPad tower defence game is free today on the App Store.

The classic game from PopCap (makers of other classics such as Bejeweled and Peggel) sees gamers take control of mutant plants to defend your garden territory from attacking zombies. The premise may sound crazy but the game is great fun.

Macworld's Chris Holt said in his Plants vs. Zombies review: "finally combining my love of gardening and my need to slaughter the undead... The beautiful cartoon artwork is on the right side of zany and sets a light-hearted tone from the get-go."

Plants vs Zombies

Plants vs Zombies has won several awards for its visual style and gamplay.

There is also a Mac OS X version of Plants vs. Zombies available on the Mac App Store, although that currently retails for £6.99. The iPad and iPhone version is just as good and available for free. There are two versions available, one for iPhone and one designed for iPad - both are free today.
