Samsung is emerging as Apple's stiffest competitor in Japan.
Its MP3 players are now the second biggest-selling portable digital music players in the country, grabbing a market share of 6 per cent.
The company hopes to achieve a 10 per cent market share, reports DigiTimes.
Samsung is able to compete on price, because it manufactures its own TFT screens and flash memory.
Its MP3 players were the eighth biggest-selling brand at the beginning of 2006, the report explains.
