The world's biggest record label Universal Music has denied reports it may soon join EMI on Apple's DRM-free iTunes Plus service.

A report earlier claimed Apple and Universal Music to be negotiating a deal to bring music from the label to the service, which offers higher-quality tracks that can be played on any computer or device.

Citing "well-placed sources", the report - on Digital Music News - claimed the label to be "actively discussing" such a deal.

However, Universal Music Group Senior Vice President Peter LoFrumento contacted Macworld this evening to deny Digital Music News' claims, saying: "The rumour is completely untrue."
