It's truly a broadband Britain, with news today that 79.2 per cent of UK internet connections are broadband connections.

That's up from 75.8 per cent in September 2006. Dial-up connections continued to decline and accounted for 20.8 per cent of all internet connections in December 2006.

There are around 16 million internet connections in the UK, with 10 million internet users accessing broadband networks using ADSL over telephone lines.

Three million connected UK web surfers use cable broadband connections.

The Office of National Statistics also observes that 2 per cent of connections are faster than 8Mbps, though the majority of broadband users employ services offering 2Mbps or less.
