Microsoft expects to sell one million Zune players in all by the first half of 2007.
While this level of sales is dwarfed by those of the iPod, Microsoft calls it a "good start" all the same, a report claims.
The device launched to mixed reviews of its feature set and its software and services model.
In the days following its US-only release, the device became the second biggest-selling music player after the iPod, but has quickly fallen to seventh place.
The company states it's in the market "for the long haul", and is optimisitic that as more models are released in more markets the company has a chance to steal a slice of Apple's pie.
