Thu, 14 Apr 2005 Combined music chart ‘seriously skewed’ against indies
According to figures from Aim, the Association of Independent Music, the first official combined music chart, due to debut on Sunday, will seriously skew the chart against independents.
The association has provided Macworld with data that shows how the charts will favour the major labels.
The positions of various bands in the official and combined music charts have been compared over a three week period. Aim claims that the research shows that in each week a number of bands form independent labels lost their top 40 status.
For example, week 12 saw Bright Eyes, I am Kloot and Roots Manuva fall out of the top 40.
The organisation also found that in one week of the 60 records that were not sold in digital format, 14 were major labels, and 46 were indie. Statistically this breaks down as 8.24 per cent of major labels not being sold online, and 57.5 per cent of records from indie labels.
Aim has made an official complaint to the Office of Fair Trading.
