iPod-wearing drivers and cyclists are causing accidents because they aren't watching the roads.

The Scotsman reports "dozens" of such accidents, as drivers take advantage of the fact that the law doesn't forbid them to be listening to a personal audio device while driving.

It's not just iPods. The new road threat is exacerbated by legions of new gadgets, with US figures quoted in the report claiming as many as eight out of ten road accidents "involve driver distraction due to hi-tech gadgets".

Sue Nicholson, head of RAC Foundation campaigns, warned: "Drivers wearing earphones or changing tracks on digital music players are increasingly having bumps or some kind of accident."

The report also warns that insurers may refuse to make payments on claims in which drivers have been distracted in this way.
