iTunes Music Store saw a 50 per cent traffic spike on Christmas Day as new iPod users loaded tunes onto their new music player gifts.

Online research firm Hitwise said visits to online music services climbed by 50 per cent between December 24 and 25.

UK electronics retailers, such as Dixons, John Lewis and Amazon, reported that music players were their biggest-selling electronic items in the run-up to the holidays. iPods were sold-out in many high-street retailers. Apple is predicted to sell 10 million or more iPods in its current quarter.

"Apple's iTunes Music Store increased its dominance of the download market, receiving twice as many visits as its next closest rival, Sony's Connect," reports The Australian.

"This compares with Christmas Day last year, when iTunes was only 10 per cent ahead of its then closest competitor, Napster," the report continues.
